Spent some time recently with “Black George” of the Tetons, after skiing Buck Mtn. He offered us a couple of refreshing root beer floats while he told stories of his travels around the world. He has literally been just about everywhere, as we found out as his screen saver slide show played. I first met Black George in 1998, after some climbing in the area, and it was nice to see him around again.
If you’re ever in the Tetons at the Death Canyon trailhead, stop in and see him.

All you hear are nightmares about editing HDV. Slow, huge file sizes, quirky……..on and on. But really, it’s rapidly improving and is quite easy and user friendly. Takes a little getting used to, but old and young dogs do learn new tricks.
Here is a 36 second-21mb Quicktime clip using a Sony HDV cam with a 35mm adapter. Fun having new toys to play with.
Best to download video to desktop, then play it. The vid is 720p (high def) formatted for internet. It requires a fast computer to watch it smoothly.
HDV is here, and it’s coming to the internet too.

We have been busy the last few months learning the exciting new format of aerial cinematography and aerial photography. I have been taking lessons to fly a remote control helicopter built specifically for flying HDV cameras and DSLR still cameras. We are learning from one of the industry leaders in this field of aerial cinematography. He is teaching us ground up from building and maintaining the helicopter, to video downlink systems, GPS autonomous flight systems, and flying techniques. It’s a slow process, and one that will take some time to develop and become proficient. The possibilities with this type of aircraft are amazing, and we plan to put it to use this spring for multiple projects including a climbing film, and an ocean sports film.
Stay tuned for an aerial demo reel in the near future. We have purchased a helicopter and are nearly finished building it. We are excited to start shooting with it when the time is right.

After 17 months of hard work, Legends Of The Fall line is finally complete. It went out monday for duplication with a big sigh of relief. When we started this project, I don’t think we had any idea of the undertaking we were stepping into. We spent over a year doing interviews, collecting archival photos/footage. And then spent 7 months editing, accidentally deleting files, and generally pulling out our hair. Well, it’s finally done, and it feels good.
Now it’s time to relax, ski, and slowly start working on the other two short projects we have brewing.
We have a couple of other bigger projects on the horizon, involving aerial imaging. But for now, it’s time to ski.

Took a break from winter and headed out to visit a friend on the coast of California to continue to brainstorm our future collaboration. We spent some nice time on the water working out techniques to film water sports. Some involving the helicopter, and some old fashion techniques shown here.

A short cut of “Legends Of The Fall Line” was recently screened at the Alpinist Film Festival in Jackson, Wyoming. It was a fun night, and nice to show this to the local Jackson audience.
